The
word chakra means "wheel" in Sanskrit
and is conceptualized as a spinning wheel encircling the
human body. When a wheel spins, its outer rim moves
fastest, while motion at the center is slowest.
Corresponding to our spiritual/human forms, the outer
activity relates to our external material selves, and the
innermost is like the quiet stillness at the very center
of our being, our Higher Self, the center of
consciousness. Many different cultures, as diverse as the ancient Indian in the East and the Native American in the West, consider chakras to be centers of energy that exist along the body's vertical axis. And blockage of that energy is said to be the cause of all physical ailments. The seven main chakras correspond to the seven physical locations, and each is related to a specific gland, a color, and certain emotional issues. So we think of seven energy wheels, each associated with a bodily/feeling function. When energy is constricted within us, we suffer the result. For example, the solar plexus is where we experience digestive problems, which symbolically correspond to our aggression, hurt feelings, and assertiveness. When energy is flowing freely, we are not bothered by these conditions. The Human Chakra System
